Content

Another key component of SEO is content. Once strategic keywords are chosen, content must be created that targets these keywords. This targeting allows the search engines to determine the subject of a page (coupled with other factors such as linking) and assign a ranking score. This ranking score, in turn, determines a website’s position in the search results of a particular keyword.

Key Element 1:
Creating search engine optimized content

  • Brainstorm and research keywords for traffic levels and competition (see keyword tools above)
  • Use keywords in content
    • Place keywords close to the beginning of content (within first paragraph or first sentence) About 3 occurances in a 400-600+ word page are ideal
  • Create content that reads well, but also arranges keywords in the right order
    • “X Y Z” and “Z X Y,” although similar, often return different results
    • Beware that duplicate content may be indexed as spam (more)
    • Do not use public content or feeds as the basis of a content strategy
  • Keep content fresh by updating it; fresh content is valued by the engines (more)
